And the “Best Comedy” Winner is… Megan!

Megan, a Rampart senior in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, loves art and writing. And not just your typical kind of writing — Megan writes screenplays. In fact, one of her screenplays won “Best Comedy” at the Rampart Film Festival!714MeganK4x5

When it comes to art, Megan loves to draw, color and paint, and her specialty is creating “mandalas” (the word “mandala” comes from the Indian language of Sanskrit and is loosely translated to mean circle or center.)  Megan proudly displays her favorite mandalas on a wall in her room. She also attends an art class outside of school and enjoys painting landscapes and flowers.727MeganK4x5

During the summer she worked at Captain D’s, but now that school is back in full swing, her priority is on her studies, as the IB program is especially challenging. Megan is in National Honor Society (NHS) as well as NHS for Spanish. She is a leader at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and also mentors to middle school TAG students in a program called “Irises and Oaks”.

Despite her busy academic endeavors, she is very family oriented, loves hanging out with her dog, Peanut, and cat, Ari, and stays fit by running and lifting weights. After graduation, Megan would love to continue her passion for film and screenwriting in college.

Aidan — Ready for Adventure

Aidan has two passions – football and snowboarding. This Air Academy senior athlete plays both defensive end and offensive tackle for the Kadets. He particularly loves playing defense, and his main objective, of course, sacking the quarterback!Aidan1

With winter right around the corner, Aidan anxiously awaits the first snowfall when he can enjoy his second love — snowboarding. Arapahoe Basin is his preferred resort and boarding through the trees is what he likes best.

In addition, Aidan works for his dad’s wholesale fastener company and this summer he spent a considerable amount of time doing inventory. What did he have to say about performing that task? “It’s doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” In other words, it was boring!

Aidan2During the Christmas season, Aidan volunteers at “Christmas from the Heart” where he organizes food and then hands it out to families in need.

When he’s not playing football, snowboarding, volunteering or working, Aidan can be found wrestling with his one year old Pit Bull mix, Cubby. So that the dog knows play time is over, Aidan ends the wrestle session with a hug.

After graduation, Aidan hopes to attend Montana State University and is looking to study engineering.

Megan — Backbending over the Equator

Meet Megan — a Colorado Springs Christian School (CSCS) senior that loves helping others and is extremely passionate about soccer.  She hopes to play soccer next year, and while the college she will attend is still undecided, she prefers to go out of state.

470MeganB3This past summer, Megan and her soccer teammates traveled to Ecuador to work in an orphanage. While there, they also painted a mural, and one of the highlights of her trip was doing a backbend over the equator!23MeganB1

In addition to playing soccer, Megan plays volleyball for her high school and is the boy’s soccer team manager. She is in the Evangelism Club, which is a women’s ministry that mentors female underclassmen and she is the General Manager of the school café.

Megan also works at a daycare; primarily with the babies. She has volunteered as a counselor at a Christian kid’s camp as well as helping out in her church nursery.542MeganB2

Hobbies?

How she has time for hobbies with her busy schedule is beyond me, but  in her limited spare time, Megan loves to crochet, paint with acrylics, sew purses and make baby hats for newborns in the hospital. Whew! Here’s wishing Megan an awesome senior year!

Emma’s World of Music

There are not many seniors that are intent on attending college in a foreign country … but Emma is one of them. In fact, she has her heart set on attending the Leeds College of Music, in Leeds, England, for a degree in music production.

Does she play an instrument? Hmmm… the question is, “How many”? Emma plays the drums, piano, guitar, ukulele, base clarinet, clarinet, bassoon and oboe. And if that’s not enough, she is learning to play the cello!Emma3

What does she do with all of that musical knowledge? To start, she performs in volunteer jazz gigs around town as well as volunteering with “A Positive Note” – a music program at the conservatory that is designed for children with disabilities.

Emma1In addition, Emma is working on the release of an “Extended Playlist” (an EP is like a mini album) and she even designed the cover. Oh yes – she’s an artist too!

Besides her love for music and art, Emma also enjoys writing fictional short stories, collecting Converse shoes and hanging out with her rescue dog. And what would a music lover name her dog? “Melody” of course!Emma2

At her high school, Emma is in the National Honor Society and International Baccalaureate Leadership, and is hoping to go to Greece with her family after her graduation from Rampart next spring.

Guilty As Charged

Ok I admit it. I’m guilty.

I’ve dropped the ball. Fallen down on the job. Neglected my duties.

Where are the images and write-ups about my seniors, you ask?

Well … it’s all Riley’s fault…

IMG_2933

On July 11th, at 9:51 pm, I had the most wonderful privilege of being present at the birth of my first grandchild – Riley Martha Schicktanz. Watching her enter this world was an amazing experience, and one that I will never forget.fullsizeoutput_4e6b

Yesterday Riley turned one month old. One month already! How could that be?  Working around my photography schedule, I’m spending as much time as possible with her (in Parker, Co) so that I don’t miss any of the magical moments of her life.IMG_3171

Like holding her in my arms and staring in wonder at the miracle of this tiny little being. I never imagined that I would be so content to spend hours doing just that. And then exclaiming in delight when she wakes for a brief period of bonding eye contact. Her diaper needs changed? I’m right on that! And, of course, I couldn’t wait to photograph her!IMG_3172

Obviously, I’m smitten. Guilty as charged.

But it is senior portrait season, and I’ve had the pleasure of photographing some great – no, make that amazing, seniors. I know you will agree!

I’m super excited to share them with you, starting with Emma – her story to follow in a few days.

In the meantime, thanks for being patient with me while I kiss and snuggle my baby granddaughter!

~Wendy

The Bell Ringing that Almost “Wasn’t”

Our bell ringing almost didn’t happen this year.

At 6:00 pm the evening before our scheduled bell ringing shift, I received a phone call from the Salvation Army coordinator informing me that she was cancelling our time. She explained that they needed to hire a “paid” ringer who could take the entire eight hour shift.

“Oh No!”  Tony was coming from Denver, Mike and Cody had taken off work, and our family was looking forward to what had become for us, a treasured holiday experience.

After pleading our case, it was decided that we would ring the bell for four hours, instead of the scheduled two, thus allowing us more time to fill the Red Kettle.

IMG_0225

As always, we are so grateful for the opportunity to support this wonderful charity, and this year we feel especially blessed since it almost did not happen. The additional hours flew by and we were fortunate to enjoy being outside on a beautiful Colorado December day.

My husband summed it up best when he said, “It is the small things that make a big difference. Being able to chat with the friendly folks who walk by and witness the generosity of the season from those who donate to the bucket makes this experience so worth-while.”

Special thanks to our friends who took time out of their day to stop by and generously donate to the Salvation Army! And thanks to those who happened upon us by chance and made a donation – we are so grateful for your generosity.

If you were unable to come visit us last week, please consider making a donation to another Red Kettle and help those in need this Christmas season.

To my portrait clients, past and present, thank you for your business and referrals. And to all who are reading this blog, I wish you a very blessed Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2019!

~Wendy

Senior Spotlight: Alex

Alex, a senior at Discovery Canyon High School, has many diverse hobbies and interests. She plays doubles tennis for DCC and is also in the school Symphonic Band, where she plays the flute. Alex loves to read, especially fantasy and adventure books, and to go to the movies. Lucky for her, she has a job as a concessionist at Icon Cinemas.AlexP4x52

One of Alex’s biggest interests, however, is Cyber Patriot Club. In this class she competes in groups of three with fellow classmates, as well as UCCS college students, on securing computers and networks. This is through a coding class at the Center for Modern Learning where the students set up virtual machines, diagnose issues and deduce how best to secure them.

AlexP4x53-1Last summer Alex took a cruise of the Hawaiian Islands, with her favorite being the big Island of Hawaii. And this coming spring break, she will travel with the DCC Band to Disneyworld, where they will get to play on Disney’s Main Street.AlexP4x54

Alex also volunteers during the holidays performing “mini concerts” of Christmas music at a local retirement home. And when this busy girl has down time at home, it is spent with her favorite little buddy, her Shihtzu Dolly.

After graduation, Alex plans to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at either Colorado State University or Northern Arizona University and then look for a job in Cyber Security.
