Jennifer — Not Your Typical Senior

In the world of portrait photography, when somebody inquires about “senior portraits,” they are typically referring to pictures taken of a high school senior at the beginning of his or her senior year.

That is not always the case, however.

Every few years I have the pleasure of photographing a “different kind of senior”. Sometimes it has been an elderly couple, in their “senior years,” that want something special to commemorate themselves and to pass on to family after they are gone.

And occasionally, a senior portrait session is for celebrating a college senior’s graduation. Jennifer Hatfield is one such senior.

Jennifer will graduate from UCCS (University of Colorado at Colorado Springs) with her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree next month. And she accomplished this goal in just four years as a single mom, while also working part time as an administrative assistant with a law firm.

Blake, Jennifer’s son, started joining his mom on campus when he was only seven years old. Whether studying, or at the library, the UCCS campus became a special place they shared, and one that would hold many mother/son memories. Thus, when Jennifer called to inquire about a senior session, she wanted to include her son in her session, as well as some of the spots on the UCCS campus that were special to the two of them.

As busy as Jennifer’s last four years have been, she has still found time to pursue her fitness goals and activities which include tennis, hiking and kayaking. After graduation this winter, Jennifer hopes to pursue a master’s at UNLV as an Aerospace or Data Science Engineer.
